Ash Wednesday – Carnival Is Over – Next Pope

Ash Wednesday for Brazilians is a big deal. Many during this time spend hours contemplating just what they will give up for the month before Easter. In contrast, Carnival is over as it just ended two days ago which this year, marked a time-period where those celebrating and performing for various samba schools were certainly bearing it all!

Regardless, Easter will begin in 30 days and Ash Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro is something taken very seriously as Brazil is the largest single Catholic nation in the world. Given the fact that the Pope just resigned, there are many that are predicting that the next Pope will be from Brazil itself.
Given the enormous economic weight and influence that the country has, it would not be surprising to see the next Pope coming from Brazil.

The Vatican liturgical office had earlier announced that Pope Benedict XVI would lead the traditional Ash Wednesday procession from the basilica of St. Anselm to that of St. Sabina, followed by the blessing and imposition of ashes.
